What a game! Mansfield came to Oxford on an impressive unbeaten run but, thanks to a neat bit of play between James Constable and Craig Nelthorpe, went home with nothing.
Oxford are unbeaten in 2009 but now have to see how the teams around them use the games that they still have in hand. It could be a last minute push to the playoff places and perhaps a place back in league football where Oxford belong.
The first half was a very even affair, with both teams having good chance. Oxford United had the most meaningful chances but a slightly apprehensive foot in front of goal meant that James Constable was unable to capitalise when left with only the keeper to beat.
Damian Batt played well in his position at right back and battered a few neat passes across the width of the pitch to spread the play out onto the left wing.
Billy Turley kept the away side at bay in the first half an hour when he palmed Aaron O'Connor's header into touch.
As people always say, this is a game of two halves and although the game was largely very even, it was Oxford who looked the more comfortable.
With thirty minutes remaining, Oxford took advantage of some sloppy defending when James Constable sprinted towards the onrushing Mansfield goalkeeper and calmly laid the ball off to Craig Nelthorpe to hammer home in confident fashion.
My quote of the weekend comes from the official Oxford United website:
"Whereas in the past fans may have become nervous when United were 3-0 up, with two minutes to play, nowadays even a 1-0 lead looks secure."
It doesn't stop me from leaning forward in my seat, but I have to agree with Chris Williams on that front!
